What is the Calloway System of Automatic Handicapping?

   Won’t a scratch or minus handicap player always win?

   No. The handicap system makes both additions and deductions. The system adjusts for the good player who selects less-challenging tees and tries to overpower the course and other players. It is always best to select the tees you would normally use and then play to the best of your ability.

   Isn’t it really just luck?

   Far from it. Regardless of your skill level, every shot is important and you can win only if you try to do the best you can on every shot.

   How will I know if I’ve won?

   We try to process all scores and post them on the Online Scoreboard as players finish their tournament rounds. If we have a lot of scorecards to process after a busy day, there might be a short delay. All scores will be entered by Sunday night or, at the latest, Monday morning. These unofficial results become official one week after the end of the tournament.

   Why are results unofficial for one week?

   That way, we can double-check all adjustments and calculations and resolve any protests. In almost all cases the unofficial results will be final.

   How do I get my winner’s check?

   If you’re still on Maui when the tournament results are declared official, you can have the pleasure of coming in to have the check formally presented to you. Otherwise we’ll mail it to the address on your reservation form.

   Is this tournament legal? It sounds like gambling.

   It is entirely legal under the laws of the State of Hawaii. It’s no different than the many fishing tournaments held in Hawaii. Your results depend on your efforts and skill, and aren’t merely a matter of luck, so the tournament is not a gamble.

   How do I know this isn’t just some rip-off scheme?

   First of all, because we wouldn’t enjoy going to jail any more than you would. Second, we wouldn’t invest the money to create this website, advertise, and do marketing for the small sums a fraud might bring in. Third, you don’t have to pay anything until we confirm your tournament week and your forecaddie.

   Why do I have to provide phone numbers? Are you going to call me or give my numbers to telemarketers?

   None of your details, including contact information, will be given to any outside entity. All correspondence for these events is conducted by email. We like to have phone numbers so we can call our winners. It’s always great to hear the happy reaction of someone who has won.

   When I call your offices I usually get a recorded message. Why?

First, please bear in mind that there is a time difference of up to five hours between some mainland time zones and Hawaiian time. Your working hours may catch us in the middle of the night.
And since our enterprise is an outdoor activity, we spend most of our working hours outdoors, either on the course or training forecaddies. We’ll return your call promptly. Please leave a message and let us know when you’d like a call back.

   Who prepares and enters the handicap adjustments?

   They’re done automatically by a computer. Of course, human fingers can slip on the keyboard and an incorrect input can cause an error in calculations. To make sure all results are accurate we take an additional week to go over results and give you time to draw our attention to possible errors.

Sure. Use a calculator and determine what you are going to score on every hole. But if you can really call your score on every hole, you should be a professional.

   How did Maui Jackpot Golf get started?

It was created by a retired attorney (handicap 12), an accountant (handicap 12), and an avid golfer (handicap 18) who believe that the best golf games happen when the stakes are high and the excitement is, too. Maui Jackpot Golf is a Maui company, a member of the Maui Chamber of Commerce, and provides employment to Maui residents. 

   Are there other Jackpot Golf tournaments?

There are plans to open similar tournaments in other resort areas: the Big Island, Oahu, Las Vegas, Palm Springs, and other mainland venues.
